During this workshop 'In contact with collections', you'll come face to face with history. Guided by experts from Leiden University Libraries (UBL), you will have the opportunity to closely examine the most important objects from Leiden's Special Collections and in some cases even use them. Of course, the curator will explain what makes each piece so important and how it fits in its historical context.

The UBL possesses works by a number of early photographers who worked in the Middle East. Alexine Tinne took photos in Egypt and the Levant in the second half of the nineteenth century, Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje was the first Westerner to take photos of the holiest places of Mecca through an intermediary, and Frank Scholten traveled through the Levant in the 1920s and sensitively documented daily life in Palestine.
