This course discusses a range of fundamental concepts and methods that can be used to extract meaningful information from collections of unstructured texts. It covers basic preparatory operations, such as tokenisation, lemmatisation and part of speech tagging. The course also discusses more advanced analytic approaches in the field of natural language processing, including sentiment analysis, studying word embeddings, named entity recognition and text classification. The course has a hands-on focus. Participants will be stimulated to develop their text mining techniques during a number of small text mining projects.

Logistics

The course will be taught on four Friday mornings. Classes will take place in person, in between 9:30 and 12:30h. A basic knowledge of programming in Python is required. Participants are asked to do some background reading and to carry out simple coding tasks as homework. The total workload is estimated at about 25 hours.
