Designing Training for FAIR and Open Data

This workshop lesson contains a slide deck as well as a collaboratively constructed spreadsheet based on the template from Verburg 2023. Version 1 of this lesson entry in Zenodo does not contain the spreadsheet, as it was added in in this version 2 update a week after the workshop was completed, with (consenting) workshop participants being added as contributers (other). Details on the collaboration document can be found below the workshop abstract.

Workshop abstract:

To better support the wider sharing and reuse of research data, many organisations and research groups are developing strategies to foster a FAIR data culture - i.e., one where data are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable. Though FAIR data need not always be open, Open Data that is FAIR is better suited to be reused, reproduced, and accessed. To facilitate innovations in FAIR data culture, education and training are an important first step towards applying principles and practices to data that is created throughout the research cycle.

In this workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience with developing training exercises that will facilitate increased awareness and application of the FAIR principles in the context that is personally relevant to them. The workshop will focus specifically on the FAIR-Aware tool (https://fairaware.dans.knaw.nl/), an online self-assessment tool. Created in the FAIRsFAIR project and now further developed in the FAIR-IMPACT project, FAIR-Aware is a versatile and flexible tool to use in education and training.

Participants will get to know the tool and develop training based on it that is relevant to their own context. Participants will be encouraged to work collaboratively and interact with each other as well as the trainers via text, voice, shared documents and polling inputs - no break-out rooms here. At the end of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of designing training on the FAIR-Aware Tool and access to a rich list of materials to reuse.

This workshop is tailored to trainers, educators, and data professionals. Researchers and data stewards are also welcome to see a more in-depth use of the FAIR-Aware tool. If additional accommodations are needed, participants are encouraged to get in touch in advance.

Note on contents:

The slide deck is distributed the same across three file formats: .pptx, .pdf, and .odp. The .pptx is the most (web) accessible, the .pdf is the most visually stable with accessible properties, and the .odp is the most open. In case of formatting issues, the .pdf would be considered the reference file.

The collaborative document ("Designing your FAIR Aware Training") is distributed the same across two file formats: .xlsx and .csv. The .xlsx file is the most (web) accessible while the .csv file is the most open. In case of formatting issues, the .xlsx would be considered the reference file.

For a complete readme of the column headers for the collaborative, refer to the template for the exercise (Verburg 2023). Each entry row in this version of the document can be attributed to the workshop participant identified in column A of that row. Contributors collaborated on the document within the workshop session (or afterwards) to design their own training using the FAIR Aware tool, thinking on the different aspects of a training, including design elements, resources available, logistics, and so-called "disaster planning."
